The Portuguese manager has highlighted where it all went wrong for the Egyptian attacker.

Former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has outlined the factors that prevented Mohamed Salah from succeeding at Chelsea. The Portuguese coach was in charge of the Blues when the Egyptian winger made his move from Swiss outfit Basel to the English Premier League in the 2013/2014 season but failed to get the best out of the attacker.

Frustrated by his non-performance and limited playtime, Salah was sent on loan to Fiorentina and then AS Roma in the subsequent season. He excelled in both spells and eventually made his move to the latter permanent in 2015, ending his Chelsea career with a total of 19 appearances.

Salah’s return to the English Premier League in Liverpool colors is one that has been hailed as one of the best transfers done in recent years. The 26-year-old forward caught worldwide recognition after he scored 44 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions.

This season, the Liverpool forward is well on course to finish on a high as he has already managed 20 goals in 37 appearances. Evidently, his days of struggles in the English Premiership are over and Jose Mourinho has stated the reasons why he failed in his first attempt.

Speaking to beIN Sports: "He [Mohamed Salah] arrived at Chelsea, coming from Basel, as a lonely boy, a naive boy, completely out of context and physically fragile.

"Then he goes to Italy. He has the experience at Fiorentina, he has the experience at Roma and when he comes back to England he comes completely adapted to the high level of European football.

"He has a higher understanding of the game, he is physically much stronger you can see his body and his fitness is much stronger and much more confident.”
