Real Madrid has been handed a massive blow by UEFA, as Sergio Ramos has been handed a two-match ban due to his outspoken tale about how he forced a yellow card against Ajax.
The Spanish center back was booked by referee Damir Skomina as time expired in the first leg of the game between the Dutch side and Los Blancos. The problem came when Ramos admitted during a mixed-zone interview that he did so intentionally, so that he could play an eventual quarter final tie without worrying about being booked.
Today, UEFA revealed their decision after a panel of experts analyzed all the evidence, including Ramos' post-match statements.
"UEFA informs that Real Madrid player Sergio Ramos will be handed a two-match ban for clearly receiving a yellow card on purpose," the short press release states.
The footballer will miss the crucial return leg of the Round of 16 tie against Ajax and the potential first leg of the quarter final stage, that is if Real Madrid can hold on to their 2-1 lead obtained against the Dutch side.
This decision is consistent to others made by UEFA in the ongoing season. Earlier this month, Porto midfielder Jesús Corona was handed a similar ban, although he had to serve his time out during the entire Round of 16 stage.
