The 23-year-old gaolkeeper was not featured in the starting eleven in the clash with Spurs.

Chelsea's first-choice goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was dropped for Wednesday's Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur following his involvement in last Sunday's League Cup Final controversy.

Prior to the shoot-out loss to Man City, the former Athletic Club player appeared to have defied the order of his manager Maurizio Sarri. The Italian coach asked for Caballero to replace the Spanish shot-stopper after he appeared to have injured his arm.

However, upon receiving treatment, Kepa signaled the bench that he was good to carry on, a situation which momentarily infuriated Sarri on Chelsea's bench. He was consequently labeled the villian after his one save in the penalty shoot-out proved to be inadequate as Man City successfully defended its League Cup.

In the aftermath of the clash, both Maurizio Sarri and Kepa cleared the air by citing that the scenario occurred as a result of a 'miscommunication'. Still, the goalkeeper was handed a fine by Chelsea and, apparently, the goalkeeper has been handed a further punishment with his demotion to the bench.

Speaking prior to the kick-off of the midweek's meeting with Spurs, Sarri revealed that the Blues' No. 1 had done due diligence and has issued an apology to him, his teammates and the club.

"I spoke with Kepa. Then we spoke altogether, because he said sorry to the technical staff, but it was not enough.

"Then he said sorry to his team-mates, to the club. I think he made a really big mistake, but we need to be [bigger]. We don't want to kill him."
