Mbappe makes Ligue 1 history with brace vs Nimes

Kylian Mbappe makes Ligue 1 history with 50th goal in Nimes win

February 23, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The PSG striker broke another record with a stellar performance in Saturday's victory.

Paris Saint-Germain starlet Kylian Mbappe's rapid rise to stardom continued after he attained an all new milestone with his goals in Saturday's win over Ligue 1 outfit Nimes. The 20-year-old forward grabbed his 50th and 51st career-league goals in the 3-0 victory at Parc des Princes and subsequently became the youngest player in the history of the French league to achieve the feat.

Paris Saint-Germain was set right on course for the cruise after his Christopher Nkunku opened the scoring in 40th minute. Mbappe was then called into action in the 69th minute to double the lead for the host before he netted his second in the 89th-minute.

With 51 goals in 88 Ligue 1 matches at the age of 20 years, two months and three days, the 2017 Golden Boy became the youngest player in the competition's history to score half-a-century of league goals. The record was previously set in 1982 by former French international and Sochaux striker Yannick Stopyra at the age of 21 years, 11 months and nine days.

At the moment, Kylian Mbappe leads the Ligue 1 goal scoring charts with 22 goals in 20 Ligue 1 outings. The former AS Monaco prodigy has registered 27 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions this season.

Following the end of proceedings on Saturday, Mbappe acknowledged the opposition's resilience and attributed his side's victory to his manager's team talk.

"We were on a false rhythm and the Nimes team was well organized.

"I think Thomas Tuchel was able to have the right words with the players for the players to run for him. As I say, we have a long way to go so we must continue like this.

"I work hard every day to try to help my team. I try to have fun too - because football is still fun - and scoring goals, breaking records, that's what drives me."
