UCL: Why Lyon can pull off a Roma and shock Barca

Champions League: Why Lyon could pull off a Roma and shock Barcelona

February 19, 2019 By Ali M.
The French outfit takes on the almighty Blaugrana on Tuesday in the first leg of their round of 16 showdown.

Lyon is gearing up for a crucial Champions League clash with Barcelona. The French side is making their first appearance in the round of 16 since 2011/12 and will have to face one of the favorites for the title in the form of Blaugrana.

However, Les Gones need fear not. The French outfit must take inspiration from a club by the name of Roma and attempt to emulate the feat they achieved in 2017/18.

Just like Lyon, the Italian club was drawn against the Spanish giant and was tipped to crash out in that quarter-final tie. However, what happened next was an unforgettable comeback, with the Serie A outfit overturning a 4-1 deficit thanks to a 3-0 second-leg victory to make the semis.

While Depay and Co. are capable of utterly collapsing against a European giant -- their 5-0 loss to PSG is a perfect example -- the Ligue 1 side is also capable of going toe-to-toe with the favorites. Remember when they beat Man City 2-1 in their opening Champions League group-stage tie before drawing 2-2 in the return leg?

And it isn't only the Citizens. Bruno Génésio's side was the team that ended the unbeaten run of Mbappe and Co. in Ligue 1, beating them 2-1. While Lyon went on to lose the following league game, they have lost only twice and have won nine times in the 14 games that followed their final group-stage tie.

Then there is the fact that Messi and Co. have not any of their last five away knockout games in the Champions League. Additionally, they have lost four of their 11 trips to France.

Furthermore, the Parc Olympique Lyonnais outfit has lost only once at home in 2019. Nonetheless, should they suffer defeat in the first leg, don't rule out their odds of achieving a favorable result at Camp Nou given Barcelona's signs of frailties at home.

Nebil Fekir is suspended for Tuesday's game, which is a huge blow for the home side. Nonetheless, all Lyon must do is keep faith, be fearless, and show heart and desire if they wish to emulate Roma.
