The Argentine will no longer wear the skipper's armband, with Samir Handanovic being named the new Nerazzurri captain.

On Wednesday, the confirmation arrived. Inter Milan revealed that Samir Handanovic will be the team's new captain, calling an end to Mauro Icardi's time wearing the armband.

The club kept their announcement short, making their decision public with not more than 11 words. However, this move will get everyone talking about the attacker's future at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

The Argentine is locked in contract negotiations with his Serie A employers amid rumors linking him with an exit. While no breakthrough had occurred, many were hopeful of seeing the 25-year-old stay, but this move could be seen as the final nail to the coffin.

The player's wife and agent, Wanda Nara, has previously stated that their priority is the Nerazzurri. However, she has also confessed that they are in no rush to extend his deal, given that two years remain while accusing the Italian side of being "nasty" in regards to their treatment of the forward.

Icardi had begun the season well, scoring nine times in 13 league games. However, the emergence of this contract saga coincides with a dip in form, as the Argentine is yet to score in his last seven Serie A appearances, his worst drought since joining Inter Milan.

Should the South American ace decide to leave, he will not be short of suitors. Real Madrid has heavily been linked with the former Sampdoria man while Chelsea has also been rumored to be admirers.

Luciano Spalletti will be hoping this controversy does not affect his team's spirit and morale. The Italian outfit is gearing up for their Europa League round of 32 showdown with Rapid Wien, with Inter Milan making the trip to Austria for the first leg.
