Investigations into the liver transplant performed on the Frenchman in 2012 is set to be reopened.

A court in Barcelona has ordered investigations into ex-Barcelona defender Eric Abidal's liver transplant in 2012 to be revived. The initial probing into the surgery began after doubts were raised about the identity of the liver donor by Spanish prosecutors.

During the hearing Abidal declared that his benefactor, whose identity he revealed as Gerard Armand, was his biological cousin. The case was subsequently ruled in favor of the former French international on the basis that there was insufficient evidence for a proper judgment to be made.

However, latest development has seen a Cataluyna court asking for the case to be reopened once more. According to Reuters, the stance taken by the judge is as a result of alleged "irregularities or discrepancies" in the clinical history.

Eric Abidal, having battled liver cancer during the 2010/2011 season, made a miraculous return to the playing field after recovering from a surgery transplant surgery.

The Frenchman played a few more matches for Barcelona and before he departed for AS Monaco in 2013. In 2014, he completed a switch to Olympiacos and retired in the same year.
