Pep Guardiola downplays Man City's performance despite Huddersfield win

January 20, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Simply not good enough...

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admonished his side to improve despite securing a 3-0 win over Huddersfield in the Premier League on Sunday. Goals by Danilo, Sterling and Sane ensured the smooth cruise for the Spanish manager's side who consequently secured a sixth win on the bounce.

The victory, once again, reduced the point difference between the Citizens and table-toppers Liverpool to four after the Reds extended their lead following the 4-3 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday. However, Guardiola was not particularly enthused by the shift his men put in at the John Smith's Stadium this afternoon.

"If we want to achieve something and arrive in the last stages of all competitions, our game has to improve," Guardiola said after his side's inert display.

"More pace, more passes in a row. We were not able to make a lot of passes, 10-15 passes in a row.

"When a team defends like [Huddersfield], you have to commit sometimes to move them a little bit. That is what we have to improve.

"Always in football, when you play well, you have the ball as much as possible. Here we had the ball but not in effective positions and sometimes we lost the ball quite easily.

"During the season you have this kind of games, you cannot always be at your best level," he added.

"We are happy we won but you always to analyze what you have done. Hopefully, we can improve in the next games."

Relatively, it was a satisfactory input for Manchester City as the final scoreline made the Premier League's defending champions the first club to score 100 goals across all competitions this season.
