How Man Utd is expected to line up vs Spurs

How Manchester United is expected to line up against Tottenham Hotspur

January 11, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Red Devils will be faced with a daunting task in Sunday's trip to take on Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's honeymoon at Manchester United could be ruined with the Norwegian manager facing his biggest test yet since taking over the club as interim manager. In fairness, five wins out of five is undoubtedly commendable. However, as to whether that can be sustained after the duel with Tottenham Hotspurs remains a tough one to call.

Obviously, Solskjaer will feature his very best personnel considering Spurs' status on the league log. Almost having his full squad available bar the injuries to Smalling and Rojo, as well as Eric Bailly's suspension, the ex-Red Devils' striker could be face with a selection dilemma.

Essentially, the No.1 spot is sorted as David De Gea is expected to retain his position between the sticks. The Spanish shot-stopper was rested during last week's FA Cup clash with Reading.

In the defensive set-up, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young could be deployed on the left and right flanks while Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones could form a partnership at the center back positions with Eric Bailly still suspended.

Although a plethora of midfield options are available, Manchester United could still maintain Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera for the deeper role. Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard could then be utilized further ahead on both wings. Paul Pogba is expected to return to the starting XI to complete the trio of attacking midfielders after recovering from the injury he sustained at the St James' vs Newcastle United.

Marcus Rashford remains the obvious choice to single-handedly marshal the attack following his recent rejuvenation under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Englishman has registered three goals in five games under the new interim manager and that could be enough to keep Romelu Lukaku on the bench once more.
