The documents have revealed that the 33-year-old was indeed in police custody last month.

Ex-Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney was arrested last month for being drunk and swearing in public, an official record obtained from a US court by Washington's ABC 7 News has confirmed. Per multiple reports on Sunday, the 33-year-old Englishman was made to pay a $25 fine last Friday.

Rooney, who currently plays for D.C. United in the Major League, was arrested on public intoxication and swearing charges at the Washington-Dulles Airport in Virginia on December 16 before he was released without bail. The former England international was said to be at the airport after making a trip to Saudi Arabia for a sporting event.

Per the law of the State of Virginia, "if any person profanely curses or swears or is intoxicated in public, whether such intoxication results from alcohol, narcotic drug or other intoxicant or drug of whatever nature, he shall be deemed guilty of a Class 4 misdemeanor".

Wayne Rooney's MLS side D.C United has since issued a statement citing that the club aims to handle the matter within its walls.

"We are aware of news reports indicating that Wayne Rooney was arrested in December," the statement reads as per Goal.

"We understand the media's interest in this matter but believe this is a private matter for Wayne that D.C. United will handle internally. We have no further comment on the situation."

It is worth noting that Wayne Rooney is still serving a two-year ban in the UK for a drink-driving offense which dates back to September 2017.
