Ed Woodward turned to the legendary manager prior to sacking Mourinho, as the club looks to end their current crisis.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down as Man United manager back in 2013, the Premier League giant has gone through mediocrity. As a result, the club has turned back to their former boss in an attempt to return to the top.

As written by the Sun, the Scottish icon has returned to the club in a consultant role in order to help steer the team out of a crisis. The 76-year-old has already played a vital role in landing their current boss, as the sacking of Jose Mourinho meant a managerial shake-up was due.

Ferguson was reportedly the catalyst in securing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s short-term appointment and the Norwegian plans on being in close contact with the retired tactician for advice. The Scot was also pivotal in securing the return of Mike Phelan, Ferguson's former assistant.

It is believed that Ed Woodward rarely turned to Sir Alex for advice prior to this latest unfolding. However, once the vice-chairman made up his mind on letting the Special One go, he sought out the Premier League legend before finding a caretaker manager.

Ferguson, who has recovered from a recent brain hemorrhage, made sure to secure both Solskjaer and Phelan before Mourinho was officially let go. The manager who won a whopping 13 league titles at Old Trafford will not return in a full-time role due to obvious reasons.
