The technology could be used in the European competition sooner rather than later.

UEFA could resort to the use of VAR in the ongoing UEFA Champions League. Top officials of the European football governing body will decide whether or not to introduce the technology when it meets in Dublin on December 2 to 3.

Back in September, executive committee members approved on the introduction of the Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League, including the play-off stage of the competition which will take place in August 2019. The 2019 UEFA Super Cup, UEFA EURO 2020, 2020/21 UEFA Europa League (group-stage onwards) and the 2021 UEFA Nations League Finals are all among the competitions that could make use of the technology.

Nonetheless, according to The Sun, the decision to delay its introduction will be revisited in the coming weeks with a number of officiating errors already witnessed in this season's Champions League campaign. Incidents including Cristiano Ronaldo's red card against Valencia in Matchday 1, the penalty call for Raheem Sterling against Shakhtar Donetsk as well as Tottenham Hotspur's disallowed goal against PSV Eindhoven could have been possibly been avoided if the opportunity for a review was available.

The introduction of the VAR will subsequently see the abolition of the use of supplementary assistant referees standing by each goal.
