A five-minute delay in kick-off has resulted in a hefty charge for the English club.

Manchester United has been slapped with a 15,000 euro fine while Jose Mourinho has been warned by UEFA for the delay in the kick-off of their UEFA Champions League clash with Valencia. The October 2 goalless draw with the Spanish outfit was held for five minutes after the host failed to report to the stadium on time.

The team bus of the Red Devils arrived at Old Trafford around 7.15pm on Tuesday from the Lowry Hotel where the team was based at. For the players to adequately warm up, the club's request for the game to commence at 8:05 was honored by the match officials.

Following the end of the proceeding, Jose Mourinho explained that the traffic congestion in the Manchester area was to blame for his team's delay. According to the Portuguese manager, the team's mishap could have been avoided had the Greater Manchester Police not failed to provide an escort to the stadium. A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Police consequently came out to dispute Mourinho's claim.

"We left the hotel at six o'clock, hoping that 30 minutes would be enough, which normally it is but this time the police refused to do an escort so we came by ourselves," the Manchester United manager said.

"We took 75 minutes from the Lowry Hotel to the stadium. UEFA was nice and the referee was nice to allow us to start the game five minutes later because we at least need half an hour to be prepared.

"It was not a problem with the club organization."

In the breakdown of the fine, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body fined Manchester United 5,000 euros ($5,750) for arriving late and 10,000 euros ($11,500) for the late kickoff. Additionally, their opponent Valencia was also handed a 1,000 euros fine as a result of the club's fans letting off fireworks in the course of the encounter.
