Former Barca boss in advanced talks with Mexico

Former Barcelona boss set to become Mexico's new coach

October 17, 2018 By Oscar Rojas
Guillermo Ochoa, El Tri's goalkeeper during the last World Cup, dropped massive hints on this matter in an interview with Marca Claro.

Up to 24 coaches were interviewed to land Mexico's coaching gig, but it seems that the list has been narrowed to one single name.

Several Mexican outlets, including newspaper Record hint that former Barcelona and Argentina boss Gerardo Martino will take over as El Tri's new tactician. The current Atlanta United coach will reportedly join El Tri as soon as the MLS season comes to an end.

Martino has been one of the most sought out coaches by National Teams in the past few months. The Argentine tactician has been linked to the USMNT, to Argentina and Mexico, who seem to be the big winners in the race to sign the former Blaugrana boss.

In fact, one of El Tri's most prominent footballers, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, spoke to Marca Claro on this matter, where he lauded the former Barcelona boss and the benefits his signing could bring to Mexican football.

"I've never had a chance to work with him, but there's a reason why he coached Barcelona and Argentina in the recent past. He knows his business, he is well prepared, and he could provide Mexico's National Team the edge it has been missing in the past to finally get El Tri to where we want to see the team," Ochoa stated.

Ochoa currently plays for Standard Liége in Belgium. He was one of the most effective goalies in the past World Cup, where he racked up 25 saves

The process to elect a new coach for Mexico has been a nigthmare, and Ochoa revealed that he felt the need to ask El Tri execs how negotiations were unfolding, so he could get a better idea on what to expect from the new coach.

"I spoke with some of our directors and they told me that we were in the final stages of the process. They want us to respect the people they are talking to, and once they've made up their minds, we will have to have faith in their choice. Once we have a new coach, we will be ready to work as one," the goalie concluded.
