The South American competition included Mexican teams in the past, but scheduling conflicts forced Liga MX teams to retire.

CONMEBOL has always shown interest to include CONCACAF teams in all of their tournaments. After a two-year hiatus without Liga MX teams, the South American football authority is ready to include teams from that league, but the agreement would also involve MLS sides in the 2020 edition of the Copa Libertadores.

According to Brazilian TV network Globoesporte, negotiations are already underway to include teams from the Mexican and North American top flights in the competition, mainly fueled by commercial interests from both CONMEBOL and teams from the aforementioned leagues.

Teams from both leagues would not be included in the 2019 tournament because most of the spots have already been handed out by South American leagues. The report does not state how the process to allocate spots for North American teams would take place.

The main issue to solve in this negotiations will be how to match the schedules for Liga MX, MLS and the South American competition, which was the main reason for Liga MX teams to leave the competition in the first place.
