Match Preview

Jose Mourinho will aim to shuffle the pack when his team features in its maiden EFL game of the season. The Portuguese manager was peculiarly unhappy with the performance of his men which saw them earn a point at home to Wolves in the EPL over the weekend.

With the former Chelsea manager being critical of the defensive frailties as well as the inefficiency in the attack, the Old Trafford outfit will quickly seek to make amends in the upcoming test. The likes of Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic, Diego Dalot, and some fringe players will, as a result, be in contention for a starting XI spot. Marcus Rashford is still unavailable for selection as he still serves the last of his three-match ban.

Derby County, on the other hand, may have to deal with the absence of midfielder Ikechi Anya and the possible omissions of George Evans and Curtis Davies with the pair battling respective injuries. Manchester United academy graduate Tom Lawrence will also be amiss as he completes his three-match suspension whereas Marcus Olsson is still sidelined with a long-term knee injury.

Still, the Rams should have enough firepower to potentially torment a 'crisis' hit Manchester United inside their own backyard. It's been quite an impressive campaign thus far for Derby County following the appoint of Frank Lampard earlier this season.

The former Chelsea midfielder has overseen his side go unbeaten in seven of their last 10 matches across all competitions. On Tuesday, the Blues all-time goalscorer will have the opportunity to try and upset his former manager Jose Mourinho with whom he won two EFL Cups at Chelsea.

However, the odds are hugely against him considering his side's numbers in previous meetings with his old boss' team. Derby has been on the losing end in seven of its last eight away visits to Old Trafford against Man Utd, with their only win at the grounds during the period coming in May 2001.

While Manchester United seeks to make it 15 wins out of 16 third round EFL Cup games, it will be interesting how the Rams will line up to contain the threat potentially coming their way.
