The Real Madrid midfielder is the latest football star to be found guilty of tax fraud.

Luka Modric has been found guilty defrauding Spanish tax authorities and has been handed a suspended prison sentence and a fine, according to reports. The 33-year-old Croatian reportedly attracted these sanctions after pleading guilty following an accusation of defrauding the Spanish tax treasury of an amount in the region of 870,000 euros.

According to El Mundo, Modric used Luxembourg-based company Ivano SARL to effectively take 290,000 euros and 579,000 euros respectively. Prior to being prosecuted, the 2018 World Cup finalist paid an amount of 1 million euros to the authorities and a new development suggests that he is now expected to pay off an additional 348,000 which depicts 40% of the money that was defrauded.

On top of the fee, Luka Modric was handed an eight-month suspended prison sentence. Just like other prolific footballers who were convicted for a similar crime in the past, the Real Madrid midfielder will not be serving an actual jail time as he is a first-time offender.

The Croatian skipper is the newest Real Madrid operative to have been accused of tax fraud after the likes of former employees Jose Mourinho, Xabi Alonso, and Cristiano Ronaldo were all prosecuted for comparable offenses. Argentinian pair Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria were also founded guilty and were sanctioned a while back.
