Marco Asensio was unhappy about the delay in the referee's decision to validate his goal.

Marco Asensio was the hero for Real Madrid once again as they run away with a narrow 1-0 win over Espanyol. The youngster's strike was however greeted by a VAR controversy which took forever to reach a resolution.

Prior to slotting the ball home from the edge of Espanyol's penalty area, Asensio appeared to be offside before latching onto Luka Modric's blocked shot. As it were, it was a very close call and the referee finally decided to award the goal following a lengthy period of consulting the VAR.

Having initially withheld from celebrating against his former side, Asensio resorted to pointing at an imaginary watch on his wrist, making reference the protracted wait from the officials to allow his goal to stand.

The strike was the Spanish international's first in La Liga this season and it momentarily placed Real Madrid a point above Barcelona in first place with the latter set to take on Girona on Sunday.
