Julen Lopetegui held talks with a former player during the international break, hoping to lure him away on a free transfer next summer.

The 2018-19 season started off with good sensations for Real Madrid, but that doesn't mean that the team's coach is willing to sit back and let some of his transfer targets slip from his hands.

According to reports in Spain, the recently-appointed tactician spent a few day in Portugal with his family during the international break. But since coaching the Spanish giants is a full-time job, Lopetegui held a meeting with one of his former pupils to analyze his contract situation with Porto.

That player is none other than the Dragons' captain, Héctor Herrera. The Mexican midfielder will be out of contract with the Primeira Liga champions next summer, and he can start negotiating a free deal away from Porto in January.

Herrera was also linked to Roma and Lyon during the recently concluded transfer window, but Porto didn't let the player leave with hopes of extending his current deal.

Lopetegui and Herrera worked together during Lopetegui's time with the Dragons from 2014 to 2016, and the Spanish boss knows exactly how the box-to-box player can give to Los Blancos' midfield.

Herrera has also played 69 games for the Mexican National Team, scoring 5 goals and handing out 11 assists. He was key to El Tri's successful run in the 2012 Olympics, where Mexico defeated Brazil to win the Gold Medal.
