Results are in, and the Croatian midfielder had some tough competition from the Portuguese ace to grab his first award of the sort.

The race to become UEFA's Player of the Year had Luka Modric, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah battling for the award, and it's been one of the closest in history.

Last year, Cristiano Ronaldo won his second straight award of the sort, but he did it with a 341-point difference against Lionel Messi. This time, Luka Modric claimed the award with a much tighter point difference against his former team-mate.

The list of players that made it to the Top 10 was revealed before the gala, with only the three top spots to be revealed today. Modric claimed the award after gathering 313 points, good enough to defeat Cristiano Ronaldo's 223-point tally. Mohamed Salah completed the podium with 134 well-deserved points.

Here's how UEFA revealed the outcome of the Mens' Player of the Year Award on their website.
