Match Preview

Real Madrid travels to Girona in their first away game of the new La Liga season. Los Blancos enter the clash on the back of a 2-0 win in their opening game against Getafe.

Following Cristiano Ronaldo' departure for Juventus, the mantle of the poster boy has fallen on Gareth Bale and justifiably so, the Welshman impressed in his side's inaugural game by capping his fine performance with a goal. Having set Julen Lopetegui's era off to a flying start, the ex-Spurs man will hope to replicate a similar form coming against a fringe side as Girona.

The upcoming clash could also see Luka Modric make his return to the starting eleven having played periphery roles in the UEFA Super Cup with Atletico Madrid as well as last weekend's La Liga outing. The 32-year-old midfielder who led Croatia to the silver medal at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, was amiss during the preseason.

Upon his return, Modric has been slowly eased into the last two games although rumors initially suggested he may be joining Inter Milan from Real Madrid. Still, the importance of the player's inclusion in Lopetegui's set-up cannot be understated and it could very much be displayed in Sunday's game.

New signing Thibaut Courtois should also be named in the squad although Keylor Navas could still be between the sticks for the European champions. Raphael Varane who had a nightmarish outing against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super is also likely to return to the starting XI despite Nacho excelling in his absence.

Girona, on the other hand, enters their second league game of the season with optimism high having stunned Real Madrid last season. The Blanquivermell recorded a famous 2-0 win at the Estadi Montilivi.

Inasmuch as ‎Eusebio Sacristán's men will fancy the idea of nicking another win, an extra effort will be required of them as they come into Sunday's game after a run of matches at home without a win.

They have drawn two and lost four of their last six games in their backyard. Against Real Valladolid last week, Girona dominated play but still ended the encounter in stalemates despite registering 13 shots.

As to whether they can put in a similar shift against Real Madrid, time will be the judge although they will have to do so in the absence of Johan Mojica, Jonas Ramalho, Stuaand Carles Planas, are all sidelined due to injury.
