Lopetegui's goalie choice for Super Cup revealed

UEFA Super Cup: Lopetegui settles debate between Navas and Courtois

August 14, 2018 By Oscar Rojas
The Spanish boss made the trip to Estonia with his five goalkeepers, but he seems to have made his choice to defend Los Blancos' net.

The first big decision for Julen Lopetegui arrived, and it seems he took the easiest one to explain.

Following Thibaut Courtois' signing with Los Blancos, it was only a matter of time before the Spanish boss had to decide which goalkeeper was going to guard the team's net in their first competitive match of the season. According to reports by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Lopetegui has decided to give Keylor Navas the starting nod over the Belgian shot-stopper.

The Spanish journal reports that only three out of the five goalkeepers were included in the list of players set to participate in the game. Those players are Navas, Kiko Casilla and Andriy Lunin, leaving Luca Zidane and Courtois out of Wednesday's clash.

This report can be confirmed by UEFA's website, where Courtois is not listed as available for Wednesday's match between Real Madrid and Atlético.

Navas seems to have won the "first round" between himself and the Belgian shot-stopper. Only time will tell if that will set a trend for Real Madrid all season long.
