Brazil vs Switzerland preview: Selecao begins their push for a 6th World Cup

June 17, 2018 By Ali M.
Here is a comprehensive compilation of TV schedules and listings for Brazil's World Cup opening game against Switzerland.

Brazil is gearing up to kick off their 2018 World Cup campaign, with everything beginning on Sunday. After their embarrassing elimination on home soil in 2014, the Selecao is eager to impress in Russia and will thus look to swipe Switzerland aside.

The biggest worry for the five-time champion was Neymar's injury back in February but the PSG ace has since recovered. The world's most expensive player returned for their last friendlies and even scored a few impressive goals.

Under Tite, the South American giant has recovered from two disastrous Copa Americas to regain their spot as one of the best teams. They qualified from CONMEBOL in first place with a 10-point advantage and head into the tournament on the back of victories over Germany, Croatia, and Austria.

Switzerland, while not the favorite, could test Brazil despite the odds. They sealed qualification via the playoffs after missing out on the top spot to Portugal, but a defeat against Cristiano and Co. was their only loss.

La Nati has since recorded lovely wins over Panama and Japan and secured a draw against Switzerland. The fact that this European side has lost only once in 90 minutes since 2015 shows they are not to be underestimated

Team news

While Tite might be precautious with Neymar, as he has suffered a few scares in their last two games, the Ligue 1 superstar should feature. Fred is unlikely to start, however, due to an injury in training.

Granit Xhaka has recovered and is thus expected to start in midfield. The Arsenal man hurt his knee during training but is now fit and back in the squad.

Match facts

  • Brazil has lost only once under current manager, Tite.
  • The Selecao tactician has led the nation to 17 wins in the 21 games he has been in charge.
  • The South American giant has scored 47 times along the way and has only conceded twice since September 2016.
  • Switzerland has lost only once in 90 minutes since a 2015 defeat to England.
