England reveals World Cup captain

England reveals their captain for the 2018 World Cup

May 22, 2018 By Ali M.
And it's not Jordan Henderson.

With the World Cup fast approaching, all eyes will be on England and whether they can make this a memorable tournament. Ahead of next month’s kick-off, the Three Lions named the player who will captain them in Russia.

That man is none other than goalscoring machine Harry Kane. The Tottenham ace has risen from being a Spurs youth to become the nation’s hottest player, one who hopes to lead the 1966 champion as far as possible.

This was confirmed by the FA on Tuesday, but Gareth Southgate made the decision the night before in a meeting with the squad at St George's Park. Explaining his reason for naming the 24-year-old as the skipper, the manager said:

"Harry has some outstanding personal qualities.

"He is a meticulous professional and one of the most important things for a captain is that they set the standard every day.

"He has belief and high standards and it is a great message for the team to have a captain who has shown that it is possible to be one of the best in the world over a consistent period of time and that has been his drive.

"My feeling is that over the last 18 months in the camps that he's been with us he has shown that he has got the desire to take that into a team environment and he recognizes the importance of bringing others with him."

While Kane might be the biggest name in Southgate’s team, this decision might come as a surprise to many given that England boasts two top Premier League captains in the form of Chelsea’s Gary Cahill and Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson. The latter was previously tipped to be given the armband for the 2018 World Cup but has missed out despite guiding the Reds to the Champions League finall.
