FA Cup Final: Giroud’s unbeaten record at Wembley vs Lukaku's goal tally

May 18, 2018 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Both players could lead the attack as respective marksmen for their clubs but who could be the standout performer in the cracking finale? LiveSoccerTV analyses.

Although both Chelsea and Manchester United have very little to write home about regarding their campaign on the domestic and European league fronts, there’s the opportunity to salvage their season by grabbing the FA Cup. The pair will be counting on their key players to step up as they hope to restore the smiles on the faces of their fans.

That will mean that the men who command the respective attacking fronts would have to bring their A-games to the party. We assess how the insurgent Olivier Giroud can lead the lines for the Blues while his opposite number Romelu Lukaku aims to end his impressive FA Cup scoring run on a high note.

Olivier Giroud

Despite facing criticisms upon joining Arsenal’s cross-town rivals, the Frenchman has settled in quickly and has justified Chelsea’s decision to acquire him with a string of impressive performances. He may not be the silkiest and dexterous forward, but he does get the job done.

Giroud has featured in three FA Cup games since joining Chelsea and has managed to score twice in his outings. His tally for the Blues in the Premier League may not be as remarkable as fans may want but his latter-day insurgence nearly fired the Blues into the top-four.

In all, the former Gunners’ striker ended the season with just three goals after 13 games. Retrospectively, it was his goal in the final of the competition last season which the trophy via a 2-1 win for his former side against the side he’s playing for at the moment.

Possessing a nine-match unbeaten record at Wembley and having a goal return of four across such games, the odds are indeed on for Giroud to become Chelsea’s lucky charm against Manchester United in a familiar territory.

Romelu Lukaku

After a tough start to life at Manchester United, Romelu Lukaku has silenced his critics by assuming his striker role perfectly. The 25-year-old forward finished the just ended Premier League season with 16 goals and seven assists after featuring in 34 games.

Nevertheless, despite getting the majority of Manchester United’s goals in this season’s cup competition, Lukaku is yet to be cleared to feature in the impending clash. The Belgian missed United's final three games of the Premier League season having been sidelined with an ankle njury.

Per Jose Mourinho’s words at his presser, a stance on his involvement will not be taken until the last moment. With five goals in five matches, Lukaku currently stands as the top scoring player whose side is still featuring in the competition.

As a result, the need to include him in the starting lineup cannot be overemphasized, especially as he comes up against his former side.
