The French club would have to wait to a bit longer to finally get their hands on another European trophy.

After a 25-year wait, Marseille saw their chance to win another European trophy go down the drain. The 10-time Ligue 1 champions, who won the inaugural UEFA Champions League title in 1993, have failed to add up to their feat over the years but had the opportunity to do so on Wednesday night.

The Europa League final played on French soil did not go according to the script of the Velodrome outfit as they fell to a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid. A double by Antoine Griezmann and a late strike by Gabi sealed the fourth Europa League trophy for Los Rojiblancos.

For Marseille, this means that they have fallen to another Spanish opponent in a second successive final after their 2-0 defeat to Valencia back in 2004 also saw them missing out on a UEFA Cup title.
