UEL final: Four remarkable Marseille stats

Four remarkable stats from Marseille’s road to the Europa League final

May 15, 2018 By Ali M.
The Ligue 1 side will lock horns with Atletico Madrid in a highly-anticipated final in Lyon on Wednesday.

Wednesday will see Marseille lock horns with Atletico Madrid in the Europa League final. Having gotten past a tricky Salzburg side in the semi-final, their toughest challenge now awaits them in Lyon.

One could be forgiven for labelling the Ligue 1 side as the underdog heading into the all-important game. However, Les Olympiens has a few stats going in their favour ahead of their tie with Los Rojiblancos.

Similarly, some of their numbers paint a bad picture for Rudi Garcia’s men. Here are four remarkable stats from Marseille’s road to the final.

Marseille’s home form in Europe this season

The French outfit has played nine home games in Europe this season, winning all but one. While the final cannot be considered a home tie, Marseille has the advantage of playing in their own country.

Dimitri Payet

In case you did not know, the former West Ham midfielder is talented. He is by far the most creative player in the competition this season, as his tally of seven assists cannot be matched by any other player.

The French side can be wasteful at times

Les Olympiens is the fourth-highest scoring side in this season’s Europa League – behind only Arsenal, Lazio, and Zenit. However, no team has had more attempts off target than Rudi Garcia’s men (91).

The Ligue 1 outfit’s disciplinary record

The Ligue 1 crew’s disciplinary record is by far the worst in the Europa League this term. They have committed the second-most fouls (186), have received the most bookings off all the teams (32), and have had more players sent off than any other side in this campaign (3).
