The verdict is in for Sergi Roberto. The punishment for his sending off in El Clasico has been announced, leaving Barcelona fans and its fans outraged.
The Spanish midfielder was one of many to start Sunday’s tie, but his time on the pitch came to a quick end. An altercation with Marcelo earned the player, who was once again playing in the right-back role, his marching orders.
Roberto was guilty of lashing out at Real Madrid’s Brazilian defender, appearing to slap the Blancos ace, and was thus shown no mercy by the referee. La Liga has taken a similar stance, announcing that the Spaniard has been slapped with a four-game ban.
This suspension has prematurely ended the 26-year-old’s season with the Catalan giant. Roberto will thus play no part in Barcelona’s final three league games of this season, as they push to end the season unbeaten.
His punishment will even carry over to next season, as he will be forced to sit out the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla. Barcelona is unhappy with this ban and immediately tweeted that they will appeal this decision.
Many on Twitter – mostly Barcelona fans – echoed the Blaugrana’s outrage. Some even pointed to an incident involving Cristiano in which he lashed out at an opponent only to receive a more lenient suspension. Check out the best tweets.

Sergi Roberto banned for four games.

In contrast, Ronaldo only got banned for two games for assaulting a player TWICE in the same game.
And the Madridsta scum think we’re favored by refs.
Sergi Roberto will miss final three games of the season + first leg of Super Cup after the summer. Barça, furious, will appeal the length of the ban.

Remind me how many games did @Cristiano get banned for this tho? pic.twitter.com/89bjAoeKHY
Sergi Roberto given a 4 match ban for slapping Marcelo on the shoulder. None of these acts were punished with cards or bans 5 different incidents off the ball, all somehow missed by officials & FA. Wonder why pic.twitter.com/AUYO1MhkeK
