Match facts

  • No away side has scored at the Wanda Metropolitano in 11 games (all competitions), a run that stretches back to January.
  • Los Rojiblancos has lost only once in their last 12 home clashes with English clubs.
  • However, that sole defeat came this season in the Champions League, losing 2-1 to Chelsea.
  • The north London outfit has not won in Spain since beating Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in 2005/06.
  • Wenger’s side is winless in their last seven trips to Spain (D2, L5) and has won only twice in 14 trips there.
  • The last time the Gunners faced a Spanish opponent in a European semi-final, they progressed to the final, beating Villarreal 1-0 on aggregate.

Preview

Arsenal’s hopes of sending off Arsene Wenger by winning the Europa League are small, but not completely dead. The north London outfit heads into the second leg at a disadvantage after drawing 1-1 at home last week.

Despite seeing both Šime Vrsaljko and Diego Simeone sent off, the Spanish giant proved difficult to break down. Griezmann capitalized on a defensive error late on in the game to equalize for the visitor and tilt this tie in their favor.

Fortunately for Wenger, Henrikh Mkhitaryan looks fit to start after training ahead of the game. The Armenian returned to action in the 2-1 loss to Man United but picked up a slight knock on his knee. Arsenal is also hopeful of including Alex Iwobi, Saeed Kolasinac, and David Ospina in the squad.

Unfortunately for the visitor, Diego Costa will likely start. The Spaniard was on the bench but did not feature in the 1-1 draw but is likely to start against a club that he knows all to well from his Chelsea days.
