The English ref was harshly criticized by many for awarding a stoppage-time penalty that saw Real Madrid through to the semi-finals.

Being involved in one of the most controversial calls in UEFA Champions League history wasn't easy, and referee Michael Oliver finally had a chance to speak about the incident that saw Real Madrid making it to the tournament's semis.

The 33-year old ref told the English Football Association how hard it was to forget about that game, but he managed to overcome criticism with the help from his friends and football personalities.

"It was a weird few days. But it was nice that so many people, both within the game and outside the game, were keen to offer their support. It was quite humbling actually and it meant a lot," Oliver stated.

"I had people coming up to me in the street and people from inside the game were sending me messages of support. It’s a nice thing to know I’ve got that backing," the ref added.

If fans thought that the Real - Juve tie was going to be the last big game for the ref this season, they'd be wrong. Days ago, the FA confirmed Oliver as the man in charge of the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester United, something that will make the ref bring back fond memories.

“It’s funny how things work out because the 1994 Final between Manchester United and Chelsea is the first one I remember watching. And now here I am taking charge of those two teams in an FA Cup Final 24 years later," Oliver concluded.
