The Bavarians were forced to make two substitutions in the first-half following respective injuries to Arjen Robben and Jerome Boateng.

Bayern Munich started their UEFA Champions League semi-final encounter with Real Madrid on a high note but was made to alter its system with Arjen Robben injuring himself inside the 8th minute. The visibly distraught winger hobbled off into the dressing room and was replaced by Thiago Alcantara.

Manager of Die Roten, Jupp Heynckes, was once again forced to change things in his side's setup after center-back Jerome Boateng also went down injured. The German international was subsequently subbed off for his compatriot Niklas Sule just five minutes after Joshua Kimmich gave the hosts the lead.

Per the historical archives of the UEFA Champions League competition, the two substitutions in the first 45 minutes was the first time in 14 years Bayern had done so in a game.
