Rating the candidates to replace Wenger

Replacing Wenger: Rating Arsenal’s top managerial candidates

April 21, 2018 By Ali M.
One big-name target has been ruled out but there are many other available candidates.

Arsene Wenger’s announcement that he will step down as manager at the end of the season shocked many. This revelation, while widely welcomed, was not expected. In fact, many believed he would stay on for next season but that will not happen.

Now, the biggest question on everyone’s mind is who will replace him. Succeeding a manager who guided the Gunners for 22 years will be difficult, which means not everyone is up for the job.

Several names have been linked with the position – some more exciting than other. Here, we rate the biggest candidates to replace Arsene at the Emirates Stadium.

Luis Enrique

His chances: Very high

Why: For obvious reasons – he is available, first and foremost, and is experienced having enjoyed success with Barcelona before embarking on a sabbatical. His wage demands might put off the Arsenal board, as he is asking for a salary similar to that of Wenger.

Carlo Ancelotti

His chances: Also, very high

Why: For the same reasons as Enrique

Patrick Vieira

His chances: Good but it might not happen

Why: According to the Sun, Wenger favors Vieira to replace him, but Arsene will likely not influence the process of choosing his successor. Furthermore, the man himself admitted to being happy at New York FC. Also, his inexperience is working against him.

Thomas Tuchel

His chances: Not happening

Why: According to David Ornstein, the German boss is headed to PSG.

Massimiliano Allegri

His chances: Too many roadblocks to bet on the Italian

Why: Number one, Juventus will not want to let him go due to his success in Italy. He is under contract until 2020 but will meet with the Serie A giant next month to discuss his future, which might give the Gunners some hope. Unfortunately, the north London side will face competition from Chelsea.

Brendan Rodgers

His chances: Unfortunately, he is a favorite

Why: His success in Scotland with Celtic and Premier League experience make him a top candidate. He might not excite Gooners, but it should not be forgotten that he almost won the English top-flight with Liverpool before his demise.

But Rodgers insists he's going nowhere

Leonardo Jardim

His chances: Not high but don’t rule this one out

Why: While he is not being linked with Arsenal as much as the aforementioned names, he could be a like-for-like replacement due to his love for young talents and connection with Monaco.
