MATCH PREVIEW

Firstly, it is Liverpool who will host the English Premier League champions-elect at Anfield on Wednesday. Although the upcoming encounter undoubtedly poses to be a tricky one, the host’s attacking exploits in Europe puts them at a slight advantage over their visitors.

Attacking trio of the Reds, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane have single-handedly run rampant on a host of opponents that have come Liverpool’s way in the course of the competition. Collectively, the band has combined to score 75 goals for the Merseyside club across all competitions.

The collaborative effort has presumably given Pep Guardiola some headache as to how best he can deal with the trident who aided Liverpool to halt Man City’s unbeaten record in the EPL via a 4-3 victory.

"Yeah, I’ll have to do that [make special provisions for Salah],” Guardiola told reporters in his pre-match presser.

“But not just him. Mane, Firmino — all three are almost unstoppable. They are fantastic, fantastic players. The way Liverpool play is so, so complicated for us. We know that.

“They are so quick; they are so tough but it’s the quarter-finals of the Champions League so we cannot expect a game at this level to be easy.”

With Liverpool currently on a 12-match unbeaten run in the Champions League, having the highest goal scoring tally of 28 in this season’s competition while also yet to lose a home game to Man City since 2003, the Spanish manager’s fears are well and truly justified. Manchester City, on the other hand, isn’t exactly a spent force as their consistency has virtually handed them this season’s Premier League title.

The Citizens will lock-horns with fierce rivals Manchester United at the Etihad this weekend and a win could be epic as they will clinch the trophy as a result. On the European front, they have similarly impressed with them occasionally picking up big-margined scorelines along the way.

Sergio Aguero, who has so far scored 30 goals this season across all club competitions, is expected to lead the charge for Pep’s side in Wednesday’s encounter after missing the international break via injury. However, Liverpool will have all but Adam Lallana fit for the impending showdown.
