The Man City and Liverpool stars are the two strong candidates for this prize, but only one can win it.

One of the biggest debates in the Premier League this season is who will win the Player of the Year award. With the title almost in the bag for Man City and Mohamed Salah set to win the Golden Boot, it is the only prize still in contention.

Many argue that Liverpool’s Egyptian ace should also win that accolade once the season ends, as his exploits with the Reds have drawn a comparison with Lionel Messi. Others insist the award should go to Kevin De Bruyne as he has been at the heart of the Citizens’ successful season.

In an interview published on Tuesday, the Belgian midfielder gave his thoughts. He praised Salah but admitted that, in his opinion, no one deserves this recognition than himself.

“If I get it, it would be nice for the team and for me,” De Bruyne said, as per the Times.

“I believe I deserve it because I have been very consistent. I am very happy with myself, I am very pleased with how I have played, I didn’t expect to be this good, to be honest.

“Salah has a remarkable goalscoring run and he plays very well like an inside forward. He has been incredible.

“With the statistics, how are we going to compare? It’s totally different, I played [against Everton] like a defensive midfielder. How can you compare me to an inside forward? I have no idea.

“He [Salah] has been outstanding, his record speaks for itself. It’s just the way it goes. Luckily I don’t have to do that. I haven’t voted yet.”

The Liverpool star has scored 37 times in all competitions, netting 29 goals and registering nine assists in the English top-flight alone. While the Man City ace has only 11 goals under his belt in all competitions, his has 20 assists – 15 in the Premier League alone.

These two players will go head to head on Wednesday, with Guardiola’s side traveling to Anfield for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash. Both players will give it their all in order to help their team reach the semi-final stage.
