He is likely to lead the Three Lions in Russia this summer.

Prior to Friday’s international friendly between the Netherlands and England, the Liverpool midfielder was named as the man to lead Southgate’s men out of the tunnel. The Three Lions went on to win the game by a goal to nil, thanks to a second-half strike by Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard.

However, the idea of Jordan Henderson calling the shots on the field of play seems to be very unpopular among the English fan base. Many have taken to social media to question his prowess as well as his overall contribution to the side, among others.

The player’s national team manager, despite the criticisms, hinted at the former Southampton man leading his squad at the upcoming World Cup after excelling in his duty against the Netherlands.

"I think we know about all the leaders in the group," Southgate declared according to Talksport.

"With Jordan, obviously he's one of the few guys that captains his club or has captained his club so he's comfortable in that role.

"He's comfortable in speaking up for the group. He has a mindset for the collective, not just self and that's obviously a hugely important attribute for a captain to have.

"I thought he worked the game out very well today. He spotted the tactical changes, he was the one sort of talking to others, talking others through on where they needed to press.

"So, he's got some tremendous human qualities I think, and he is a certain leader of men."

With Gary Cahill looking like a doubt for the summer’s competition due to his unimpressive form, the battle for the armband currently lies between Jordan Henderson and the injured Harry Kane.
