Match Facts & Stats

  • This will be the seventh meeting between Russia and France
  • Russia have only beaten France twice in their six prior meetings (D1 L3)

Preview

Both sides come into this game off the back of losses, albeit Russia's defeat was hardly surprising. The 2018 World Cup hosts tried to contain Brazil for as long as possible, but their resistance predictably eventually ended and they were thoroughly beaten 3-0 following a flurry of second-hand goals from Miranda, Coutinho, and Paulinho.

France, meanwhile, took an early lead against Colombia, and thought they were in cruise control after snatching two goals through Olivier Giroud and Thomas Lemar. However, in taking their foot off the gas, they allowed their opponents, who were spearheaded by Radamel Falcao a way back into the contest, and a comfortable 2-0 lead soon turned into a disappointing 3-2 loss by the time the final whistle sounded.

Despite his struggles for Manchester United, Paul Pogba did get to start in that game, albeit he was replaced later in the second half by Juventus's Blaise Matuidi as Didier Deschamps opted to make a flurry of substitutions.

Les Blues will naturally be looking to get back to winning ways and to take advantage of a Russia side who will be bitterly disappointed not to be able to get anything out of their game against Brazil. Can they get the job done in St. Petersburg? Or will Russia, backed by their home support, manage to stage an upset and give themselves a pick-up ahead of hosting the World Cup in just a few months' time?
