10 things to watch for in the UCL midweek

Man United vs Sevilla, Barca vs Chelsea, and more: 10 things to watch for

March 13, 2018 By Ali M.
Barcelona hosts Chelsea on Wednesday, with Sevilla traveling to Man United a day earlier in the four remaining round of 16 games.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, fans will be treated to more exciting Champions League games. While many will have their eyes on Wednesday's Camp Nou clash between Barcelona and Chelsea, there are many other interesting ties to follow.

Man United, having earned a 0-0 draw at Sevilla, will now host the Spanish outfit in their attempt to make the quarter-final. That game, alongside Roma vs Shakhtar Donetsk, are the two games scheduled for Tuesday.

The following day, the Blaugrana and the Blues will lock horns. The scoreline is currently 1-1, meaning there is a lot left to play for. Elsewhere, Bayern Munich travels to Besiktas with a commanding 5-0 aggregate lead. Here are 10 things to watch out for in the midweek matches.

1. Sevilla  could win their first Champions League round of 16 tie

The Spanish club has never made it past this round in the Champions League but could put that awful record to an end should they beat Man United.

2. Sevilla to end wait for first win in England

In six trips to England, the Spanish club has failed to register a single victory (D3, L3).

3. Man United to improve home record vs Spanish clubs

The Old Trafford side has won only one of their last six home clashes with a Spanish opponent.

4. Roma to end 10-year wait to make the quarter-final?

It has been a decade since the Serie A giant made the last eight. If they wish to end their long wait, they must overturn the 2-1 deficit from the first-leg clash with Shakhtar.

5. Will Chelsea’s unbeaten run vs Barcelona come to an end?

The London giant has now gone eight games without defeat against the Catalan outfit. That unbeaten run will come under a stern test on Wednesday, however.

6. The Blaugrana to move level with the Blues in the head-to-head record

These two sides have faced off 13 times in this competition. Barcelona has won only three times compared to Chelsea’s four victories (D6).

7. Will the London giant end Barcelona’s unbeaten home run?

The Catalan side has not tasted defeat in Camp Nou in the Champions League in 24 games (W22, D2). This is an unbeaten run that began in September 2015.

8. Will Messi score his 601st goal in Wednesday’s clash?

Messi scored his 600th career goal in the 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid but missed Barcelona following game due to the birth of his child. Having ended his hoodoo against the Blues, he will now be keen on adding to his goals tally when Conte’s side arrives at Camp Nou.

9. Besiktas to record only their second home win vs a German opponent?

The Turkish outfit has won only once at home against a Bundesliga side in eight attempts (D1, L6).

10. Besiktas to make the greatest ever Champions League comeback?

They trail Bayern Munich 5-0. No team has ever overturned a five-goal deficit in this competition. While the odds of that happening are very unlikely, it’s not impossible.
