Fiorentina took on lowly-placed Benevento in what was a truly emotional game inside Stadio Artemio Franchi. On the 13th minute, the play was stopped and an all-around applause and cheers resounded in the stadium to commemorate the passing of the host’s former captain and No. 13 man, Davide Astori.
The whole arena was decorated in Viola’s colors with a section spelling out “Davide 13”. Exactly 12 minutes after the tribute was paid, the man brought in to replace the late captain in defense, Vitor Hugo, opened the scoring for Stefano Piola’s side.
The No. 31 shirted man headed home Riccardo Saponara’s corner-kick and went over to an area close to his side’s dugout to salute the image of his deceased captain. There was relatively very little action afterward as the goal ended up being the only one in the game.
