Match Facts & Stats

  • Arsenal have lost their last four games across all competitions
  • Milan have kept six clean sheets in their last six games in all competitions
  • The Diavolo's record against English clubs in UEFA competition is W11 D11 L12
  • However, they have a solid record at home, with wins in eight of their 15 matches at San Siro
  • Except their 4-0 loss back in 2012, Arsenal have won four of their last eight matches in Italy
  • Arsenal's record in Italy is W5 D4 L6
  • Overall against Italian opposition it is W15 D8 D8
  • Milan were undefeated in their first nine European matches this season, winning seven of them (including the first six)
  • However, they have won only three of their last eight European home games in the knockout phase
  • And they have only won one of their last six round of 16 ties - when they beat Arsenal in 2011/2012 in the UCL

Both teams couldn't be facing different runs of form at the moment. Arsenal, for their part, have lost their last four games across all competitions, which includes two straight defeats to Manchester City within days of each other and a recent shocking 2-1 defeat to Brighton in the Premier League last weekend. This has left Arsene Wenger's side with little hope of making it into the top four, so realistically, the only chance the Gunners have to secure a Champions League berth is to win the Europa League, a competition they are featuring in for the first time under the long-serving French tactician's tenure.

Milan, by contrast, after a difficult start, seem to have finally found their footing under former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso. Although the Derby della Madonnina was cancelled following Fiorentina skipper Davide Astori's tragic death last weekend, the Rossoneri are unbeaten in their last 12 games across all competitions. This includes a three game winning streak in Serie A, and succcessfully seeing off Lazio in the Coppa Italia to book a finals clash with Juventus later this season.

New signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang won't be able to play here, as he's cup-tied from having featured with Dortmund, while Alexandre Lacazette, Santi Cazorla, and Nacho Monreal continue to miss out due to injuries. As for the hosts, Andrea Conti and Luca Antonelli are among those who won't be available, and experienced defender Ignazio Abate - a part of the squad who took on Arsenal six seasons ago - is in doubt for a reunion with the Gunners due to fitness problems.

It's set to be an interesting re-match of the 2011/2012 Champions League quarter-finals, in which Milan won the first leg at San Siro 4-0. Arsenal, however, fought back to win the second leg 3-0 at the Emirates, but it wasn't enough to overturn the deficit, and the Gunners were sent packing. Will they avoid digging themselves into a similiar hole this time around? Or will Milan inflict another major blow on an already struggling side who certainly are lacking in confidence at the moment?
