The Ligue 1 giant needs to overturn a 3-1 deficit to progress, but they were in a similar situation to this 25 years ago.

On Tuesday, PSG will host Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League clash. These two European giants were paired against each other in the round of 16, with the French side expected to punish the struggling Spanish outfit.

It was Los Blancos that showed off their strength, beating Les Parisiens 3-1 in Madrid to have one foot in the quarter-final. However, if history is anything to go by, all hope is not lost yet.

A comeback is not out of the question for Unai Emery’s side. 25 years ago, the Paris club was in a similar situation after losing 3-1 at the Bernabeu in the UEFA Cup quarter-final.

However, PSG put in a dream performance in Paris in the second leg of that 1992/93 encounter. PSG was leading 3-0 at stoppage time when Real Madrid’s Iván Zamorano scored to make it 3-1 in the 93rd minute. A minute later, Antoine Kombouaré scored for the home side to end the game 4-1, thus completing an unforgettable comeback and going through on a 5-4 scoreline.

The Ligue 1 leader is at a similar disadvantage, but if they came back once, they can do it again. A 4-1 win is not required, as a 2-0 victory will suffice.

In that UEFA Cup encounter, PSG had the likes of George Weah and David Ginola in their lineup. This time around, Emery has been dealt a huge blow in the form of Neymar’s absence through injury.

Nonetheless, the Parc des Princes has enough quality to compensate for the sidelined Brazilian. Di Maria will deputize, with Draxler being another option in attack to help PSG repeat history and overturn a 3-1 loss in Madrid.
