All the Serie A games scheduled for Sunday, March 4 were put off after news of the sudden death of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori emerged.

The sad incident took place prior to Fiorentina’s away game versus Udinese. According to numerous reports, the 31-year-old skipper of the Violets who was due to feature in the afternoon’s encounter passed away in his hotel room after he suffered a cardiac arrest while asleep.

Owing to that, the early kick-off game between Genoa and Cagliari was abandoned while the players were warming up. Subsequently, the six other games scheduled for the day – including the Milan Derby - were also postponed indefinitely.

Davide Astori started his senior career at AC Milan but joined Cagliari after failing to make a single appearance for the Rossoneri and successive loan stints with Pizzighettone and Cremones. The Italian also played for AS Roma on loan from Cagliari before finally joining Fiorentina in 2016 after playing the prior season there as a loanee. Astori scored three goals in 109 appearances for the Viola.
