The Spanish striker criticized Zidane for not providing him enough playing time in key games last season, and Zidane chose not to keep his thoughts to himself.

The relationship between Zinedine Zidane and Alvaro Morata at Real Madrid didn't end in the best of terms, and the recent statements between both of them confirm that notion.

Last week, Alvaro Morata complained about his sub role with Los Blancos, even if he became the team's second best striker behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

"We won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. I played many games, but mostly with the 'B unit'. I never asked to be a regular starter, but fact remains that I didn't play in any Champions tie, or against Barcelona, Atlético or Sevilla," Morata said.

Hinting what could have been the main cause of his departure from the La Liga giants, Zidane answered a question related to this issue on today's press conference. Needless to say, Morata won't be happy with his words.

"There are no irrelevant games for me, each one has a different meaning. Of course, all players would rather play against PSG than face other La Liga teams, but that can't be our only motivation. What's important is to embrace your role with the team, and Morata played many good games for us last season," Zidane replied.

Spanish media repeatedly claimed that Morata wasn't happy with his role at Real Madrid last season, which caused him to accept Chelsea's offer last summer.

Morata played 43 games for Real Madrid last season, scoring 20 goals in all comps. He's established himself as Chelsea's first-choice striker, but he's managed to score only 12 goals in 33 games, and is currently on a 10-game drought with the Blues.

Given Benzema's poor form and Borja Mayoral's failure to develop into a suitable replacement, some Real Madrid fans believe that Morata could have thrived this season if he had been patient.
