The German's overall round of 16 record is respectable, but a deeper look paints a different picture.

On Wednesday, Liverpool will lock horns with Porto in the Champions League round of 16. This is the first time the Premier League giant has reached the knockout stage of this competition since the 2008/09 season, meaning they must announce themselves in Europe once more.

Luckily, they have a manager whose record at this stage is respectable. Although this is his first Champions League campaign with the Reds, the Normal One has been here before with former club Borussia Dortmund.

In his seven-year spell with the Bundesliga side, he had led them to four-season spells in this coveted European competition. He even came achingly close to lifting the title only to lose to Bayern Munich in the final in 2013.

Only once did his team crash out of the competition in the last 16. There was a group stage exit in his debut season, but he led his team to the final and then quarter-final in the following two campaigns.

It was only in his final season with BVB that the bowed out of the competition at this stage, losing 5-1 on aggregate to Juventus who went on to the final. However, his numbers are not perfect.

When looking at his individual games at this stage, not the aggregate score, he has lost more times than he has won. In six round of 16 games, three have ended in defeats and two in victories (D1).

Liverpool’s record against their opponent should give them more confidence, though. Never has the Anfield side lost to Porto in four previous meetings, winning two and drawing the other two.

Nonetheless, the Merseyside giant is without a win in their last seven trips to Portugal (W2, D3, L4). The Reds will hope to put an end to that winless run on Wednesday.
