Antonio Conte’s days at Chelsea are numbered. After Monday’s embarrassing 4-1 loss to Watford, the odds of the Italian being sacked have increased.
The defeat, their second in a row, leaves them six points behind second-placed Man United. A top-four finish is even under danger, as they are only a point ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham.
As a result, the former Juventus boss is on the brink of being sacked. A meeting will be held on Tuesday to discuss his future at the club, with one manager being lined up as Conte’s replacement.
According to Diario Sport, that man is Luis Enrique. The link between the Asturian boss and the Stamford Bridge job is nothing new, but the report claims that the London outfit is “one step away” from the former Barcelona tactician.
Enrique, who has also managed Roma and Celta Vigo, is the Blues’ preferred target. Having left Camp Nou last summer, he is available to take over at Chelsea anytime.
The report also adds that the 47-year-old’s potential appointment would also result in former Chelsea defender Juliano Belletti being named sporting director. Enrique’s arrival could also gift the Blues a boost for their Champions League clash with Barcelona, as he could have vital tactics to halt Messi and Co.
As for now, the under-fire Conte remains the boss at the Bridge. He will be tasked with preparing his boys to bounce back from two consecutive defeats. They will not be in action until next Monday when they host West Brom.
