The UEFA Champions League enters the final Matchday of the group stage tomorrow, with round six games taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Over those two days, some will secure qualification while others will bow out early this season.
So far, only eight teams have booked their spot in the round of 16: Barcelona, Bayern, Chelsea, Besiktas, Man City, PSG, Real Madrid and Tottenham. Eight spots are up for grab, but a whopping 14 teams are competing for those spots.
They are Atlétic, Basel, CSKA Moscow, Juventus, Leipzig, Liverpool, Man United, Napoli, Porto, Roma, Sevilla, Shakhtar Donetsk, Spartak Moskva, Sporting CP. Here’s what those 14 teams need to do to secure progression.
Group A
Competing teams: Man United (12 points), Basel (9 points), CKSA Moskva (9 points)
Matchday 6 games: Man United vs CSKA Moskva, Benfica vs Basel
Permutation: A point would be enough to secure the Red Devils qualification and top spot. If Mourinho’s side and Basel both lose, the English club will go through. If CSKA and Basel win, there will be a three-way tie and Man United will crash out if they lose by seven goals.
CSKA need to have more points than Basel to go through. In case of a three-way tie, CKSA need to win by three goals to finish in second.
Group C
Competing teams: Roma (8 points), Atletico (6 points)
Matchday 6 games: Roma vs Qarabag, Chelsea vs Atletico
Permutation: Atletico needs to win at Stamford Bridge and hope Roma loses in order to qualify. If the Italian club draws and they are both tied at 9 points, the Spanish outfit will go through.
Group D
Competing teams: Juventus (8 points), Sporting (7 points)
Matchday 6 games: Olympiacos vs Juventus, Barcelona vs Sporting CP
Permutation: In the case of a draw, Juventus will go through thanks to a superior head-to-head. Sporting must win and hope Juventus loses in order to qualify.
Group E
Competing teams: Liverpool (9 points), Sevilla (8 points), Spartak Moskva (6 points)
Matchday 6 games: Maribor vs Sevilla, Liverpool vs Spartak Moskva
Permutation: Liverpool needs only a draw to qualify. If they lose to Spartak Moskva, Klopp’s side will be out unless Sevilla also loses – the Spanish club has a superior head-to-head. Spartak needs a win to progress while Sevilla could still qualify with a defeat if Spartak loses.
Group F
Competing teams: Shakhtar (9 points), Napoli (6 points)
Matchday 6 games: Feyenoord vs Napoli, Shakhtar Donetsk vs Man City
Permutation: A failure to win would spell the end for Napoli. The Italian club needs victory, accompanied by a Shakhtar defeat at City, to qualify.
Group G
Competing teams: Porto (7 points), Leipzig (7 points)
Matchday 6 games: Porto vs Monaco, RB Leipzig vs Beşiktaş
Permutation: Leipzig can only beat Porto to the last qualifying spot by having more points, as the Portuguese club has a better head-to-head.
The final group stage round will treat us to some exciting games. Bayern Munich hosts PSG in the standout game, but there is excitement elsewhere as well. Check out the key fixtures below.
