REVEALED: The Golden Boy finalists

The three finalists for the Golden Boy award have been announced

October 21, 2017 By Ali M.
The 24-man shortlist has been cut down to only three players, with only one Premier League star making the cut.

The three finalists for the prestigious Golden Boy award have been announced. The initial 24-man shortlist has been cut down to only three names by Tuttosport, the newspaper that runs the prize, as several stars were axed.

Kylian Mbappe of PSG, Ousmane Dembele of Barcelona, and Gabriel Jesus of Man City are the remaining finalists who aim to follow in the footsteps of Messi and Rooney by winning this award. The competition is tight, however, as each player has their own stake on the award.

Mbappe’s exploits last season made him the most sought-after youngster of the summer. He helped Monaco win Ligue 1 and reach the Champions League semi-final before sealing a mega-money move to PSG.

Dembele ruptured a tendon earlier this season and has thus been handed a long layoff time, limiting his contributions for Barcelona. Nonetheless, his undeniable ability to score, assist, and beat defenders is why the Blaugrana splashed $124m – not including add-ons – on the 20-year-old Frenchman.

Gabriel Jesus is the most in-form player of the three. The Brazilian has scored eight goals in all competitions this season, including one against Napoli in the vital 2-1 win in the Champions League. That victory came after the striker’s two-goal haul in the 7-2 league win over Stoke City.

Renato Sanches won the award, handed to the most talented player under the age of 21, last year. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Christian Pulisic failed to make the cut.
