Match Facts & Stats

  • For the fourth time, Manchester City have been drawn in the same UEFA Champions League group as opponents from Italy
  • City have won none of their last four home games (D3 L1) against Italian teams
  • They did beat Roma 2-0 on the road during the 2014/2015 season (after drawing them 1-1 at home)
  • That 2-0 win is their only success in their last eight meetings with Italian clubs, home and away (D4 L3)
  • However, the Sky Blues are unbeaten in their last 11 home matches in the UEFA Champions League (W8 D3), qualifying included, since that Juventus reversal on matchday one in 2015/16
  • Napoli are unbeaten in their last three games against Premier League clubs (W2 D1) since losing 2-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates in the 2013/2014 group stages
  • Overall Napoli have a record of W0 D2 L3 on the road against Premier League sides
  • Napoli have never progressed beyond the round of 16

Preview

Including their impressive 7-2 thrashing of Stoke City this past weekend, Pep Guardiola's men are currently on a 17 game unbeaten streak across all competitions (W14 D3) since the 2-1 loss to Arsenal FC in the FA Cup semi-finals on 23 April. With Manchester United being held to a scoreless draw with Liverpool, Manchester City now sit alone on top of the Premier League table by a slim two point margin. Overall, they have also won ten out of their 11 games this season (seven of those in the Premier League) and have a perfect six points from six in the Champions League.

Whilst Sergio Aguero has returned from his injury much faster than expected, the Sky Blues' demolition of Stoke showed that the team are more than well equipped to carry on without him. Aguero was on the bench for that fixture, and it remains to be seen if he will be risked for this fixture, albeit that's highly unlikely given that he did suffer fractured ribs less than three weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Napoli also are on top of their league. Maurizio Sarri's side haven't lost a Serie A game since Atalanta beat them back in February 25th of last season (W18 D2) and this season, have won all eight games, including a recent narrow 1-0 win over Roma. That sees the Partenopei sitting on top of the table, two points ahead of Inter. Like City, Napoli have had a strong start to the season, with wins in 11 out of their last 12 fixtures, and their only bad mark was a surprise 2-1 defeat to Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar. Were it not for that bad performance, Napoli would be tied on points with City in a battle for top spot in this quartet.

Will City be able to overcome their recent Italian hoodoo? Or will Napoli pick up a much needed road win against the English giants in what should be a highly entertaining fixture?
