Here's how things are in the group ahead of the matches

Preview

The last home game for the USA saw the Stars and Stripes slip to a 2-0 loss to Costa Rica, and Bruce Arena will be naturally keen on avoiding a second straight home defeat. The Yanks were able to salvage a draw in their last World Cup qualifier thanks to Bobby Wood's late equalizer against Honduras and coeme into this game knowing that a loss, combined for a win for Honduras against Costa Rica will effectively end their hopes at featuring at next year's tournament.

Missing out at the World Cup would be nothing short of a disaster for the USA, who have qualified for every single edition since the 1990 tournament in Italy. The last time they missed out was in 1986, which was during a period that they had failed to qualify for well over 30 years since featuring in at the 1950 edition in Brazil.

A win would also make sure that the USMNT avoid an inter-continental playoff against a team from Asia, which could either be Australia, or curiously, enough, Syria. Panama, by contrast, would be perfectly happy with a draw as they sit in third spot.

In terms of head-to-head record, it's 12-1-5 in favor of the USMNT, but having struggled so far in qualifiers, the Yanks obviously won't be taking Los Canaleros lightly tonight.
