Match Facts & Stats

  • Liverpool are undefeated in 9 of their last 10 matches
  • There has not been a goalless draw in any of the last 62 league fixtures between the teams – a run dating back to February 1974 and a meeting at St James' Park
  • Liverpool have scored 21 goals in their past 10 visits but have not hit the net in the last two trips to the north east
  • This will be the first time in five clashes between the clubs that both managers have remained unchanged from the previous meeting

Liverpool come into this game having won just one of their last six matches across all competitions. That was a 3-2 result against Leicester City, and even that was barely by the skin of their teeths. Had Jamie Vardy converted a missed penalty, things could have been a lot different. Whilst a draw with Sevilla in the Champions League is certainly not the worst thing, as the Spanish side are not easy opponents, they nonetheless did have a lead and ended up dropping vital points.

Still, they will be bitterly disappointed to have to settle for a stalemate with Russian outfit Spartak Moscow, especially as all three points were desperately needed. The fact that Jurgen Klopp's side keep on conceding goals - and thus dropping points - is something that will be especially disconcerting. However, a win over Newcastle could help them close the gap on the top four as Chelsea ended up losing to Manchester City in yesterday's highly anticipated game. With Manchester United coming up next for Liverpool after the international hiatus, it's paramount that the Reds head into that fixture with some positive momentum.

Klopp will be missing both Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana for this match, whilst Newcastle's Benitez will have to make do without defenders Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara, but Serbian international Aleksandar Mitrovic makes his return after yet another ban, giving the hosts a much-needed additional option in attack.
