Preview

Despite beating Anderlecht in the Champions League, the feeling is not all is well at Bayern Munich. Carlo Ancelotti's side currently find themselves outside the top four, albeit it's still early in the season and a win agianst Mainz will help restore order for the Bavarian titans. Still, the Italian tactician could opt to heavily rotate his squad for this fixture, despite needing to pick up all three points following their shock loss to Hoffenheim. Thomas Muller could regain his preferred position, meaning that Robert Lewandowski could be relegated to the bench, especially as die Roten have another match with Schalke coming up in just a few days' time. Meanwhile, Jerome Boateng could start after finally recovering from injury.

As for Mainz, they come into this game having defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 to finally record their first victory of the season. However, they're dealing with a spate of injuries which will make this match even more difficult - especially considering that they have failed to win their last seven on the road and have been unable to score in their last three away from home.

  • Die Schwarzgelben, however, haven't beaten Koln since March 25, 2012 (6-1)

Preview

Borussia Dortmund

Peter Bosz's side will be coming into this match having failed to pick up a win in their last two fixtures. They ended up drawing Frieburg 0-0, which was a very frustrating result as they had a man advantage for much of that game, and ended up on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline against Tottenham in their Champions League group stage opener in London. Given that Dortmund are in arguably one of the toughest groups, with Real Madrid also in their quartet, failing to earn a point from that fixture leaves them in a very tough hole and prior to the match with Tottenham, they had not conceded a goal all season.

They now will have to pick themselves up and get back on track quickly, as they are currently on top of the league table with seven points, but could find themselves slipping back down the table by the time their game doesn't take place until Sunday and reigning champs Bayern will have already faced Mainz on Saturday.

Koln

Meanwhile, Koln have had a horrible start to the Bundesliga season and sit dead last in the table with zero points from their first three games. They arrive having taken on Arsenal in their debut Europa League campaign, and like die Schwarzgelben, had to travel to London for that fixture.

Interestingly enough, Koln have managed to frustrate Dortmund in their most recent meetings. Could this represent a banana peel for Dortmund? The last three fixtures have finished as a draw, and prior to that, Koln defeated Dortmund. In fact, one has to go back to March 2012 to note that last time Dortmund were able to pick up all three points against Koln, when they crushed them 6-1, and they've failed to register a victory against die Geißböcke at Signal Iduna Park since October 2011.
